If Perfect were a destination
that we could all get to,
do we really want to go there,
do we think it’s the right thing to do?
If we all arrived at this place called Perfect,
how hard it would be to maintain
a life kept so totally flawless and fake,
unblemished, and unstained.
Who wants to live having to work so hard
to be something we’re not and so glib?
How much better it’d be to make mistakes
while choosing to really live.
So I say to you if that road ever calls,
and it’s a drive you consider to take,
I hope you put up a big detour sign
because the entire road to Perfect is fake.
Let’s sidetrack on the roads more scenic
to Imperfect where real people exist,
where loving and learning and trying out life
are simply too hard to resist.
Let’s embrace this land of Imperfect,
next door to Acceptance and Grace,
the neighborhoods where love and real flow free,
our home, we can call this place.
Perfectly imperfect,
that’s what we are,
messed up, healed up,
with many a scar,
but stronger for the living,
more willing to be forgiving,
because brothers, sisters, neighbors,
that’s who we are.
We’re all in this together.
