You are like a fabric
woven through the years
with threads of joys and triumphs
sewn together with many tears.
The colors don’t always match,
some bright, some dark, some deep,
together though, they blend and hold,
as your memories they keep.
Some threads are tough and sturdy
while some are fragile too
but woven all together
they make up the beautiful you.
Your threads are each a story
that together tell how you got to this place,
of who you are and why you are,
all woven together with grace.
I imagine our threads of loss and grief in black and loneliness in the deepest and darkest blues. I see the threads of weddings in creamy warm whites, love stories in reds and deep pinks, births in sunny yellows and soft pinks and blues like the sky. I have to believe adventures are colors of the rainbow. Sadness and depression I believe are shades of grey, washed out, and tough times in browns that feel like rough twine. Mixed together, they hold each other strong. Mixed together, they form this wildly colorful, absolutely non-sensical pattern called us, and there’s not another one like it. If we run our hands across the fabric, we remember the story behind each thread and are reminded how far we’ve come and how hard we worked to sew one thread to another. We have more to go. And no matter what, none of them will match the pattern, there is no pattern, they’ll just add color and life to it. And each one will tell yet another story and it will all come together beautifully just like you.
