I struggle daily with the question, “God, what do YOU want me to do?” I often wonder if I’m not being still enough to actually hear Him, if I’m worrying too much about doing too much, am I not doing enough…. what purpose does He want me to serve. These words came to me that He’s not looking for anything grandiose from us. In fact, I kind of see God scoffing at the word grandiose when His desire for us is so simple. And while there are days I feel like I could shine to kingdom come, there are days my light is only a flicker… but even small flickers can light the candle of someone else who turns and lights another. A lot of flickers together can do so much in the darkness.

And she asked….

“Lord, oh, Lord, what do I do?
How in the world do I honor You?
You are larger than life, and so, so good,
You give me more than I feel that you should.

How can I do justice to such a man as you,
tell me, Lord, tell me, Lord, what am I to do?”

And the Lord smiled at her as He reached out His hand,
and said, “Child, my sweet Child, I don’t need anything grand.
I just want you to shine so others see my light,
so they know there’s hope in the darkness of their night.

I just want you to be filled with my spirit every day,
be prayerful in your actions and in the words you say.
Let others see me in what you say and do,
tell them that I love them, that’s all I truly need from you.”

And she smiled and she hugged him with all her might,
and said, “Okay, Lord, I got it, for You, I will shine so bright!
I’ll pray about what I do and the words that I say,
and I’ll shine for you, gladly, and be a light along the way.

Thank you, God, for giving me your grace,
for in my darkness, the light shone on your face,
it guided me all the way back to you,
so I’ll do my best to share that, Lord, in all that I do.”
